The bokken and other wood products carried by bokkenshop.com are made through
a process that perfectly blends the scrutiny of tradition with the consistency
of advanced technology. Every piece is made only from carefully selected
wood - wood that undergoes several selection measures throughout the entire
manufacturing process.
For example, our products made from traditional white oak must pass a selection
process before they are cut into large planks, another one after they are
dried in the sun for three to six months, another one before they are cut
into smaller planks, and a fourth one after they are dried in special dryers
for two more weeks. Only the highest quality woods go on to be shaped.
This scrutiny in drying our woods is a must because all woods react differently
to the drying process, and because moisture greatly inhibits the ultimate
integrity of the shaped product. All of this happens under the examining
eye of our expert craftsmen. In this way, our weapons can very much be
considered to be in line with the traditional Japanese aesthetic of perfectly
blending form and function.
However, we include modern technological innovations as well. In order
to provide consistency, an advanced shaping machine is used determine the
proper length, width, and general shape of every weapon - which of course
also adds to the integrity of the product. This process is followed by
a painstakingly twelve-step sanding process that is all done by hand. Only
at this point is the weapon finally polished and lacquered. The end result
is a strong, no-nonsense, well-balanced, and perfectly weighted weapon
that will serve you well in your training.
We are very proud of our products, and we are sure that you will be as
well.
