Samue is originally worn by monks as semi-formal wear, but most often worn
as their fatigue uniform. "Samu" means everyday labor work as
practiced by Zen Buddhists, and "e" means clothing. The Samue
is designed for comfort and, unlike the usual Kimono, there is much more
freedom of movement. Those who feel the Japanese Kimono is priced out of
reach, find the Samue both comfortable and a good value. But the greatest
attribute of the Samue is relaxed comfortable mood it puts you in when
you wear one, that is, the Samue is an excellent easy wear for lounge or
living room.
This Indigo-Dyed Samue is not a typical wear available today. It is made
with only the best cotton yarn, using methods that have been passed down
through Japan's long history of craftsmanship. The fabric is not dyed after
the construciton, as in the norm today, rather it is crafted via the traditional
multi-step process that has made Japan's indigo dye famous through out
the world. First the cotton yarn itself is soaked in the container of indigo
dyed until all the dye is fully absorbed. Then the yarn is wrung and set
to dry under the sun. This process of dyeing and oxidizing is repeated
over and over again until the yarn takes on the proper shade of color as
determined by the master craftsman.
100% indigo-dyed cotton. All handmade in Japan.
